Meet Ryan Rivers: OT & Emotional Resilience Trainer

Ryan Rivers is an occupational therapist who understands the emotional barriers to function firsthand. Early in his career, he noticed that many residents faced stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions that often went unaddressed in rehab—yet these directly affected their ability to heal.

Without the tools to support them or manage his own emotions, Ryan eventually experienced burnout himself. Hitting rock bottom became a turning point, leading him to discover Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and evidence-based tools for emotional resilience.

These practices helped him navigate stress, rediscover fulfillment, and better support clients in reducing the functional impact of emotional challenges. During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, he supported the therapy teams, floor staff, and management in managing stress. 

Today, Ryan trains and mentors healthcare professionals to manage the emotional demands of caregiving and learn how to help their clients do the same—fostering resilience, purpose, and renewed enjoyment in their work and life.

A Missing Link in OT

Within my first year of practice, it became clear there was a group of clients I simply couldn’t reach.  

I had been trained to modify tasks, address person factors, and adapt environments — yet none of these tools seemed to help them. These were the individuals whose fears, anxieties, and emotional discomfort created self-limiting behaviors and kept them from engaging in what really mattered. 

That’s when I began to recognize a gap in my training. I could modify the external environment, but not the internal one — the thoughts, emotions, and beliefs shaping their capacity to participate. 

Lacking this skill set limited the depth to which I could empower my clients. Because at the core of every meaningful occupation is one truth: It is meaningful because we care— and yet, caring also opens us to emotional discomfort, vulnerability, and even pain. 

As occupational therapists, it’s within our scope of practice to use evidence-based techniques that equip our clients to navigate emotional discomfort and expand their capacity to engage in meaningful occupations. When we do, we not only transform our clients’ lives — we elevate our profession as a whole.
